Penedes Wine

The Penedés DO was created in 1960 and is located in the south of the province of Barcelona and in 16 municipalities of Tarragona. There are 3 distinct areas: Upper Penedés, Central or Mid Penedés and Lower Penedés. The Penedés denomination of origin was the first one to make wine in stainless steel barrels, which shows its innovative nature.

The denomination covers 26,100 hectares of vineyards, with 153 wineries that produce wines and more than 4,900 vine growers. The soil is deep, permeable, with clay and has a limestone base. The climate is warm and mild, like the Mediterranean climate, and it is influenced by the sea and the sun. With average temperatures between 12 and 14 degrees, the rains are important enough to make this a great vine-growing region.

The white grape varieties used are: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Muscat and Chenin Blanc. White wines are soft and fresh, and have a certain complexity in their aromas. Red wines are very structured and are made from: Merlot, Garnacha, Carignan, Pinot Noir, Ull of llebre, Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
